Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the right to challenge specific decisions made by the official, echoing the system already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
