As any prominent honors show draws close, you'll find an outcry for the addition of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of followers with niche passions.
My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.
Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category in 2014
- A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
- Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games in the world and have been for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
