A group of seven accused members of German far-left group stand trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist group along with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the group was responsible for attacks on sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
